This project was created as part of the commissioning of the new Canadian Royalties copper-nickel mine on the northern tip of Nunavik. In late May of 2011, IGLU Construction Inc. was tasked with the organization and supply of materials for the construction of a new port facility, dredging and the construction of a new warehouse with a 100,000 t. capacity located more than 120 km from the mine itself. Thanks to the company's flexibility and expertise in this type of project, all equipment and materials had been delivered to the port of Montreal for mobilization by mid-June of 2011 and blasting operations commenced later that month. Drilling and blasting operations cleared more than 300,000 m3 of rock. To meet the customer's tight deadline, the building was constructed using precast concrete panels post-tensioned to the rock and overhung by a steel structure.
Given the project's environmental restrictions, IGLU Construction Inc. had to be innovative by chartering and mobilizing a cruise ship from Florida. A first in the cold Arctic waters. In addition to all the support work provided by IGLU Construction Inc. in Deception Bay, work was also performed in the mine, including the repair of the dam holding back the production water, the excavation and backfill of most production buildings, and support for the winter maintenance of roads and service areas. The project was carried out in joint venture with EBC Inc.
